Guide to December 16th EU Privacy Changes to Messenger API and Re:plain
In short
Starting on December 16th, 2020, Facebook will place restrictions on its usage of the Messenger API, due to its continued effort to comply with privacy guidelines from the European Union. The changes to the Messenger API ultimately means changes to your ability to use Re:plain.

This post will describe who's affected, why this change is happening, what the limitations are, and what our immediate suggestions are for you.

Please read the guide carefully, as determining your account's exact limitations and whether you're affected lies in the details.

Finally, these limitations and restrictions are evolving every day, so please continue to revisit this article as we announce additional changes and suggestions on workarounds. We will continue to communicate the latest developments with you as soon as we get the information.
Why are these changes happening?
Messenger functionality restrictions are happening because Facebook is complying with privacy guidelines dictated by the European Union.

Facebook will be making changes to its Messenger API, which Re:plain uses to send and receive messages between our customers and their websites.

Because there will be technical regulations placed on Re:plain's usage of the Messenger API, Re:plain has no choice but to comply with these constraints, which ultimately means limitations in your ability to use Re:plain in the way that you do today.

You can read the technical limitations in Facebook's documentation, but since the changes are indeed technical, use this guide to understand what they mean to you and your Re:plain account.

We at Re:plain sincerely empathize with any frustration you might have with these limitations. Because we rely on the usage of the Messenger API to create amazing chat experiences for you and your customers, we also have to comply with any limitations to the API.

Again, we at Re:plain will communicate any additional changes to you as soon as we have that info.
Who's affected?
The December 16th changes will impact all 27 European Union countries and Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein, and the United Kingdom. But to provide the same approach to all our customers we roll out the following updated to all our customers across the world.

Note! Even if your Facebook page isn't located in the EU, you still are affected, so please continue to read.

Three groups of Re:plain users are affected by these changes.
  • Admins from Europe or located there.
  • Operators from Europe or located there.
  • Any chats with people in Europe.
How Re:plain will operate after 16th of December.
To solve these limitations we're going to rebuild the way how Facebook will operate.
Since December 16th Re:plain will provide:

1. We add a list of all your customers.
It means, that you will be able to see all your customers in a separated list view. Navigate across them and see separated chats with each customer.

2. You will get Chat history.
All our customers who use Facebook Messenger will get Chat history add-on free of charge.
3. New way to communicate with your customers.
Since Facebook, has removed the ability to use any buttons in bots we change the way how you reply to your customers.

We did everything to leave the process same simple as it was.

Now, when someone will write you from your website, you will get your customer's message, with the following information about your client:
  • Chat name
  • Unique ID or name if provided.
  • Message itself.
  • Link to a dialogue.
This link to the Dialogue is the main change that we announce now for all our users who use Facebook Messenger. As for Admins and for the Operators.

To reply to your customer now you have to click on a link, that will open a 'Dialogue' where you will see the conversation with your client. It's the same click that you had before with a Pencil button.
In the same Dialogue you can always click on a Burger menu to see all the list of your customers, and see their conversation logs.

In a new interface We kept all the features that you had before on Facebook Messenger. Like User Info. Transfer clients between operators, Black list, file exchange, etc.
4. How to open Menu
To get into Menu now you can click on a Menu button that is visible now all the time in your Facebook Messenger or you can send message with "0" (Zero) on Facebook Messenger.
5. Everyday confirmation.
Unfortunately it still with us, once again, we're sincerely empathized with any frustration you might have with these limitations. Because we rely on the usage of the Messenger API we have to keep it.

If you consider it too complicated you can transfer your admin rights to Telegram where you don't have to confirm anything.

We're happy to answer any questions you might have. So feel free to write us here.
